Merci Mic d’avoir accepté cette interview. C’est vraiment un honneur. Avant de commencer je voudrais te remercier toi et les autres membres du groupe pour cette superbe tournée que vous nous avez offert, le concert à Paris été mémorable, c’était un grand moment.

 

1 : Vous venez de terminer la tournée Time Capsule célébrant vos 40 ans de carrière, quel est ton ressenti après cette super tournée ?

 

Mic : Pour moi, c’est la meilleure tournée qu’on ait réalisée. Je pense qu’on aurait pu (et on aurait dû) continuer au moins encore un mois de plus.

 

 

2 : Lors de cette tournée, nous avons eu le grand bonheur d’entendre « More Than Meets The Eye » pour la première fois en live ! Mais aussi d’autres titres comme « Start From The Dark » ou « Always The Pretenders » par exemple que vous n’avez pas joué depuis longtemps. Comment avez-vous fais le choix pour faire la set-list ?

 

Mic : Oh, il y a eu quelques débats autour du choix des chansons et chacun avait sa propre idée sur la façon de faire. Au final, je pense qu’on a réussi à créer un concert qui correspondait à tous et on était heureux de voir que le public aussi a aimé.

 

3 : Vous avez partagé avec nous « Hold Your Head Up » un nouveau titre ! Puis vous l’avez joué sur la tournée Time Capsule. Comment avez-vous ressenti l’accueil de cette chanson ?

 

Mic : Étonnement bien, étant donné qu’elle n’est pas sortie avant le début de la tournée.

 

 

4 : Comment as-tu trouvé l’accueil des fans Parisiens à la salle Pleyel?

 

Mic : C’était génial ! C’est toujours un plaisir de jouer en France.

 

5 : Peux-tu nous en dire plus sur les dates de sorties du matériel qui doit sortir pour l’anniversaire des 40 ans ? Notamment le documentaire et la rééditions de tous les albums en vinyles ?

 

Mic : Les dates ne sont pas encore fixées, on espère que notre management pourra vous tenir au courant. Gardez l’œil sur notre page Facebook, c’est là que tout sera annoncé en premier.

 

 

6 : Cela fait maintenant 19 ans que vous êtes de retour, depuis 2004 vous avez sorti 6 albums studio. Quel est ton sentiment sur cela ? Quel est ton album préféré de cette période ? Et pourquoi ?

 

Mic : Je pense que le fait qu’on ait sorti plus d’albums studio après la pause qu’avant, en dit beaucoup. On reste dynamiques, curieux, et on aime ce qu’on a toujours la chance de faire. Je pense que « Walk The Earth » est le meilleur à ce jour, mais c’est comme ça que ça marche, le dernier et toujours celui qu’on préfère. J’ai récemment écouté « Secret Society » et il y a de superbes chansons dans cet album aussi.

 

7 : Le dernier album « Walk The Earth » date de 2017. Les fans attendent avec impatience le prochain album. Le single nous a mis en haleine. Comment se passe l’avancement du prochain album ? Peux-tu nous en parler ? Quel style, quelles orientations aura cet album ? Joey a parlé récemment du fait de revenir aux sources, cet album aura-t-il un son plus eighties?

 

Mic : On ne sait jamais vraiment quelle orientation nos albums vont prendre avant qu’ils ne soient plus ou moins finis. Ils prennent souvent une tournure différente de ce qu’on avait prévu de faire au départ. Donc, pour le moment, je ne peux pas vraiment répondre honnêtement.

 

 

8 : Comment se déroule le processus d’écriture dans le groupe ?

 

Mic : On compose de plusieurs façons. Beaucoup d’idées vont et viennent entre Joey, Leven et moi-même. Joey et moi avons une façon de faire qu’on pratique depuis longtemps. On se retrouvent tous les deux, Joey s’installe à la batterie avec un micro, et moi je suis aux claviers. Ensuite on improvise pendant quelques heures et on enregistre tout. C’est sûr, on rigole bien en réécoutant les merdes qu’on a produites, mais beaucoup d’idées de ces sessions sont devenus des chansons de nos albums.

 

9 : Tu participes beaucoup plus à l’écriture dans les derniers albums. Est-ce quelque chose qui te plait ? Vas-tu t’investir dans ce sens sur le prochain album ?

Mic : J’adore être créatif et je compose tout le temps, mais la plupart de ces compositions ne conviennent pas au style d’Europe. Honnêtement, je ne sais pas à quel point je jouerai un rôle dans l’album à venir mais j’aime vraiment l’exercice de composition.

10 : Depuis la reformation il y a eu un débat entre fan sur les claviers certains estimant qu’Europe devrait remettre plus de clavier comme avant. Ce débat est clos aujourd’hui. Quelle est ton avis sur le rôle du clavier dans un groupe de rock en 2023.

Mic : Tout dépend du groupe en question. le claviériste du groupe Rammstein représente une grosse partie de leur son, alors qu’on entend à peine celui du groupe Foo Fighters. Personnellement, je ne m’attends pas à ce qu’on m’entende à chaque seconde d’une chanson, tout ce que je veut c’est jouer là ou il faut… et passer un bon moment, comme toujours.

11 : J’apprécie beaucoup les intros de certaines chansons que vous utilisez dans les concerts (War of kings, Walk the earth, stormwind etc…). Est-ce toi qui les a créés ?

Mic : Oui, j’ai créé toutes les intros.

12 : Sur la vidéo j’ai vu que tu avais sur ton mur une platine Pro-Ject VT-E. Est-ce ta seule platine, collectionnes-tu les vinyles ?

Mic : Je crois que c’est la seule platine que j’ai. Je ne dirai pas que je collectionne les vinyls mais j’en achète à l’occasion et j’ai toujours tous mes disques de l’époque.
 

13 : Si tu pouvais revenir dans le passé, avec l’expérience que tu as, quels conseils donnerais-tu au jeune Mic de 22/23 ans au moment de la sortie The Final Countdown?

 

Mic : « Travaille plus dur ! » (et ça s’applique toujours). Mais ça n’aurait servi à rien de me donner un conseil, je n’aurais pas écouté

 

14 : En mai 2018, vous êtes allés pour la première fois en Australie, y a-t-il des coins de la planète où vous n’êtes pas encore allés et où tu aimerais jouer ?

 

Mic : On n’est jamais allé en Afrique

15 : Beaucoup de musiciens, chanteurs plus ou moins connus postent des covers de vos titres sur You Tube, les regardes-tu, et quel est ton avis sur certaines versions disons plus ou moins… réussies ? Et quels conseils leur donnerais-tu ?

 

Mic : Je ne les cherche pas mais je suis tombé sur quelques uns. Certains s’en sorte vraiment bien, parfois je rigole bien et d’autres fois j’aurais aimé ne jamais tomber sur certains.

 

 

16 : Beaucoup de groupes sont suédois, dans les jeunes générations, je pense notamment à Heat, Eclipse, Dynazty entres autres… D’ailleurs, Heat ne cache pas leur admiration pour vous. Que penses-tu de cette nouvelle génération ?

 

Mic : Ils sont supers ! Y a de bonnes chansons, des musiciens géniaux et des albums qui ont un bon son !

 

 

Eh bien, merci pour ta disponibilité Mic. Un dernier mot pour les fans du groupe ?

 

Mic : Merci d’être là, vous êtes la raison pour laquelle on continue. On n’y serait jamais arrivé sans vous.

 

 

Interview of Mic Michaeli

Thank you Mic for agreeing to do this interview. Really, it is an honor. Before we begin, I wanted to thank you and the other members of the band for this awesome tour you gave us! The concert in Paris was memorable, it was a great moment.

 

You have just finished the Time Capsule Tour celebrating 40 years of your career. How do you feel after this great tour?

 

Mic : To me this was the best tour we have ever done. I feel like we could have and should have gone on for at least an other month. 

 

During the tour, we had the great chance to listen to “More Than Meets the Eye” live for the first time! But other songs too, such as “Start from the Dark,” or “Always the Pretenders,”which you had not played in a long time. How did you go about choosing the set-list?

 

Mic : Oh, there was some debate about what songs were to be included and everyone had 

there own ideas on how to choose them. In the end, I think we managed to put together a show that we all could live with and we were happy to see that the audience liked it too.

You shared your new song “Hold your Head Up” with us! And you played it during the Time Capsule Tour. How did you feel the song was received?

Surprisingly well considering it wasn't released until the tour premiere. 

 

What did you think of the welcome your French fans gave you at the Salle Pleyel?

 

Mic : Fantastic! It is always a pleasure to play France.

 

Could you tell us more about the release dates of the upcoming merchandising planned for the 40th anniversary? Especially concerning the documentary, and there issue of all the albums on vinyl?

 

Mic : The dates are not set yet, but hopefully our management can update you on that. Keep your eyes on or Facebook page as everything will be announced there first.

 

You came back 19 years ago, and since 2004, you released 6 studio albums. How do you feel about all this? What is your favorite album from this time and why?

 

Mic : I think the fact that we have released more studio albums after than before the hiatus shows something. We're still vital, curious and love what we are fortunate to be able to do. I think ”Walk The Earth” is our best one so far but that's the way it goes; your latest one is usually the favorite. Recently I happened to hear ”Secret Society” and there are some great songs on that one too.

 

The last album “Walk the Earth” dates back to 2017. Fans are eagerly awaiting the next one, and the single got us excited. How is the next album coming along? Can you tell us about it? What style and direction will the album take? Joey recently talked about going back to the basics. Will the album have a more “eighties” sound?

 

Mic : We never really know about what direction our albums will take until it's more or less done. It often takes a different turn than what we set out to make from the start. So at this moment, I can't really give you an honest answer.

 

How does the writing process take place among the band?

 

Mic : We have different ways of writing. There are a lot of ideas being sent back and forth between Joey, Leven and myself. Joey and I have a process we've been practicing since way back. We meet up just the two of us, he sits at the drum kit with a vocal microphone and I play keyboards. Then we just jam for a few hours and record it all. We sure get some good laughs listening back to some of the crap that came out from it, but quite a few ideas from those sessions have turned into tracks on our albums.

 

You were even more involved in the writing of the last albums. Do you like doing so?Are you going to be as much involved in the next one?

 

Mic : I love being creative and I write music all the time, most of it not being suitable for Europe though. I honestly don't know how much involvement I will have in the forthcoming album but I definitely like the process of writing music.

 

10. Since the members of the band went back together, there was a debate between fans. Some thought that Europe should have added more of the keyboard like before. This debate is now closed. What do you think about the role the keyboard plays in a rock band in 2023?

 

Mic : It all depends on what band you refer to. Rammstein’s keyboard player is a very big part of their sound whereas Foo Fighter’s guy is hardly heard at all. Personally, I don't have a desire to be heard every second of a song, all I want to do is to play what fits… and have a good time, all the time.

 

11. I enjoy listening to some of your songs’ intros you use for the concert (”War of Kings”; “Walk the Earth”; “Stormwind…”). Did you create them?

 

Mic : Yes, I create all the intros.

12. On the video I saw on your wall a Pro-Ject VT-E turntable. Is this your only turntable? Do you collect vinyls?

 

Mic : It's the only turntable I know I have. I wouldn't say I collect vinyls but I buy them occasionally and I still have all my records from back in the day.

 

13. If you could return to the past, with the experience you have now, what advice would you give to the 22 or 23-year-old Mic when “The Final Countdown” was released?

 

Mic : Work harder! (And that's still applicable) But, it would have been no use giving myself advice, I wouldn't have listened.

 

14.In May 2018, you went in Australia for the first time. Is there any place on the planet where you have not set foot yet and where you would like to perform?

 

Mic : Never been to Africa…

 

15 : Many musicians, and singers more or less famous post covers of your songs on YouTube. Do you watch them and what do you think about some of them that did more or less well, let’s say?

 

Mic :  I never look them up but I’ve stumbled upon a few. Some of them are really clever, sometimes you get a good laugh and other times you wish you hadn't stumbled across them.

 

16. There are many Swedish bands from a younger generation. For instance I think about Heat, Eclipse, or Dynazty among others. By the way, Heat don’t hide their

admiration for you. What do you think of this new generation?

 

Mic : They are great! Good songs, fantastic musicians and good sounding albums.

 

17.Well, thank you for being available Mic. Any final words for the band’s fan?

 

Mic : Thank you for being there, you are the reason we still do this. We couldn't have done it without you!
