Ant May from Planetmosh spoke to Joey Tempest, singer with Europe to ask about their new album and touring plans.

Planetmosh: Your new album, Bag of Bones is due to be released at the end of the month and sounds fantastic.  Can you tell us a bit about the album?

Joey: It’s our ninth album and our fourth album since we started again. Its a straightforward classic rock album with some blues influences.  With all the experience we have now and with all the things we’ve gone through personally and with the band over all these years, I think for the first time we can express ourselves this way.  We’ve really done something different and moved ahead again, so we’re on this journey, switching producers, we’re keeping it fresh, but this may be one of my favourite Europe albums ever.

Planetmosh: You played Doghouse during your show in London in february last year – was that the first song you’d written for the new album?

Joey: Yeah we wrote that on the road last time we were on the road, and we then realised we wanted to make more of a straightforward rock album.

Planetmosh: You’ve got Joe Bonamassa appearing on the new album doing slide guitar on the track Bag of bones.  How did this collaboration come about?

Joey: We started listening to Joe Bonamassa for about three or four years ago in the dressing room with the band Europe.  We started discussing it and we liked some of the songs so much, “Tea for one” the Led Zeppelin cover he did, and The Ballad of John Henry, songs like that, and we wanted to find out who produced it.  We discovered that Kevin Shirley does all the Bonamassa productions, and we had the same idea in our head to make more of a seventies classic rock album, so we approached him and we realised when we started working with Kevin that we could ask him about Joe and he asked him and Joe was delighted at playing on the record.  We also met Joe actually on the last tour.  He came up to play Doghouse with us live as a guest artist in Stockholm, 2011 and he was a great guy, so we asked Kevin to ask him.

Planetmosh: Is that a sitar being used during Firebox?  Theres an instrument in the background and for one short section the song sounds very Indian

Joey: I think that’s Mic Michaeli playing around with his keyboards.  It’s got some spiritual undertones that song, I think it’s very majestic, it’s got some interesting twists and turns I think.

Planetmosh: What’s the song writing process in the band – is it a collaborative thing or are there one or two main song writers?

Joey: We work in different ways.  Sometimes the guys send me ideas, John Norum, John Levén and Mic Michaeli they send me ideas and I sort of put the melody, the words and the chorus together then send it back to them and then we talk about it, sometimes it happens that way. Other times I’ll go to Stockholm and we’ll go to our rehearsal place outside Stockholm and try ideas together on the spot so to speak, so we work in different ways, either we work sending ideas to each other or we work out the songs together at our rehearsal space in Stockholm.

Planetmosh: What are your inspirations for writing the lyrics?

Joey: Lyrics are mainly from life really, from personal experiences, also what the band members go through personally, and also what the band goes through.  On Bag of bones its quite honest and real lyrics.  It can be anything that is happening in or lives.  On the song “Bag of Bones” I wrote that lyric in the middle of the London riots, so that’s why the chorus is “My city lies in ruins”.  It was a strange experience being Swedish, growing up in Sweden and living in London, and having that happen around us, my family and everything that was quite strange.  Things like that can creep into the lyrics or maybe just personal states of mind you know, things that you feel yourself.

Planetmosh: You’re due to play Download festival this summer for the first time.  How does it feel to finally be playing the festival?

Joey: We’re delighted of course, but also to play at Donington – we’ve never played at Donington park.  We’ve been there as kids watching other bands so its amazing to play there finally.

Planetmosh: I imagine it’s an amazing feeling to play festivals or gigs at venues where you’ve watched bands as a fan yourself.

Joey: Yeah its kinda cool, it’s a special feeling and you know you’ve been standing out there as a kid screaming and singing and then you stand up there yourself, its amazing.

Planetmosh: You’re due to tour later this year with the UK dates being in November.  Can we expect to hear many songs from the new album on the tour?

Joey: On the Bag of bones tour that will be going on all autumn, including the UK, Yes. I would like us to try 4, 5 or 6 new songs on our own tour whereas on the festival tour in the summer you don’t usually play as long so maybe 2 or 3 new songs will be enough there.

Planetmosh: When you buy music Which do you prefer – Vinyl, CD or legal mp3 downloads ?

Joey: I prefer mp4 itunes downloads at the moment.  I have loads of CDs at home, loads and loads but I download my music these days.

Planetmosh: I suppose if you travel a lot then downloads are more convenient.

Joey: Yeah, we’re touring all the time on the road and we check out music all the time, and if you like something you just get it immediately. I prefer the sound on the CD slightly better, mp3′s are slightly hard sounding, but the mp4s that itunes are using are better, they are different types of compressions, but to check out bands quickly its easier to download.

Planetmosh: What was the last album you bought?

Joey: Probably Rival sons actually, yes it was Rival Sons.

Planet Mosh (PM) : Votre nouvel album Bag of Bones, dont la sortie est prévue à la fin du mois, est fanstastique. Pouvez-vous nous parler un peu de cet album ?

Joey Tempest (JT) : C’est notre 9^e album, le 4^e depuis notre réunion. C’est un simple album de rock classique avec des influences de blues. Avec toute l’expérience que nous avons maintenant, tant avec ce que nous avons traversé personnellement et avec le groupe, tout au long de ces années, je pense que c’est la première fois que nous pouvons nous exprimer ainsi. Nous avons fait quelques chose de vraiment différent et nous avons progressé, alors sur ce voyage, nous avons changé de producteur, conservons la fraîcheur, mais c’est probablement plus que jamais l’un de mes albums favoris d’Europe.

PM : Vous avez joué Dog house lors de votre concert à Londres en février dernier – est-ce la première chanson que vous ayez écrite de ce nouvel album ?

JT : Ouais nous l’avons écrite sur la route lorsque nous étions en tournée la dernière fois, et nous avons réalisé que nous voulions faire davantage qu’un simple album de rock classique.

PM : Joe Bonamassa fait une apparition sur votre nouvel album faisant un slide à la guitare (ndlt : explication ici (tout en bas) : http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Techniques_de_jeu_pour_guitare) sur le morceau Bag of Bones. Comment a commencé votre collaboration ?

JT : Nous avons commencé à écouter Joe Bonamassa il y a 3 ou 4 ans dans les vestiaires avec les gars. Nous en avons discuté et nous aimons particulièrement certaines chansons, « Tea for One » sa reprise de Led Zeppelin, et « La ballade de John Henry », des chansons comme ça, et nous voulions savoir qui l’avait produit. Nous avons découvert que Kevin Shirley faisait toutes les productions de Bonamassa, et nous avions cette idée en tête de faire un album rock plus seventies, alors nous l’avons contacté et, alors que nous avions commencé à travailler avec Kevin, nous avons réalisé que nous pouvions lui demandé si Joe voulait jouer avec nous, il lui a demandé et Joe a été ravi de jouer sur ce disque. Nous avons effectivement aussi rencontré Joe sur la précédente tournée. Il est venu jouer Doghouse à Stockholm en 2011, et c’était un gars super, alors nous avons demandé à Kevin de lui demander.

PM : Est-ce une citare que vous utilisez sur Firebox ? Il y a un instrument en fond sur une petite partie de la chanson qui sonne vraiment indien.

JT : Je pense que c’est Mic Michaeli qui joue aux claviers. Cette chanson a des nuances spirituelles. Je pense qu’elle est très majestueuse, qu’elle est intéressante par ces zigzags ( ??), je pense.

PM : Quel est le processus d’écriture d’une chanson dans le groupe – Est-ce une collaboration ou y a-t-il 1 ou 2 auteurs principaux ?

JT : Nous travaillons différemment. Quelquefois, les gars m’envoient des idées ; John Norum, John Levén et Mic Michaeli m’envoie des idées et je mets la mélodie, les paroles et le refrain ensemble et je leur renvoie, et puis nous en rediscutons ; quelquefois ça se passe comme ça. D’autres fois, je vais à Stockholm et nous allons à notre lieu de répétition à l’extérieur de Stockholm et travaillons les idées ensemble, sur le terrain, pour ainsi dire, alors nous travaillons de façon différente, soit nous travaillons en nous envoyant les idées les uns aux autres ou nous travaillons les chansons ensemble dans notre local de Stockholm.

PM : D’où viennent vos inspirations pour écrire les paroles ?

JT : Les paroles sont inspirées de la vie réelle, en majorité, d’expériences personnelles ou de ce que peuvent traverser les membres du groupe personnellement ou ce que vit le groupe. Sur Bag of Bones, les paroles sont honnêtes et réelles. Ça peut être n’importe quoi qui arrive dans la vie. J’ai écrit les paroles de la chanson Bag of Bones pendant les émeutes de Londres, c’est pourquoi le refrain est « my city lies in ruins » (ma ville est en ruines). C’est une expérience troublante d’être suédois, d’avoir grandi en Suède et de vivre à Londres, d’avoir vécu ce qui se passait autour de nous, ma famille, et tout était si étrange. Des choses comme ça peuvent se glisser dans des paroles ou même des états d’âme personnels, des choses que vous ressentez.

PM : Il est prévu que vous jouiez au Download Festival cet été pour la première fois ; Comment vous sentez-vous de jouer enfin dans ce festival ?

JT : Nous sommes bien sûr ravis de jouer à Donington – Nous n’avons jamais joué à Donington Park. Nous sommes venus enfants voir jouer d’autres groupes, alors c’est tellement impressionnant d’y jouer enfin.

PM : J’imagine que c’est impressionnant de jouer dans des festivals ou de donner des concerts dans des lieux où vous avez vu des groupes dont vous êtes vous-mêmes fans ?

JT : Ouais c’est super cool, c’est un sentiment très particulier vous savez quand vous avez été là, hurlant et chantant comme un gamin et que vous jouez vous-même… C’est impressionnant.

PM : Vous avez prévu de tourner en Angleterre plus tard cette année en novembre. Pouvons-nous espérer entendre beaucoup de chansons du nouvel album sur la tournée ?

JT : Sur la tournée Bag of Bones qui va se tenir en automne, Angleterre comprise, oui. J’aimerai que nous essayions 4, 5 ou 6 nouvelles chansons sur notre propre tournée, alors que sur la tournée des festivals d’été vous ne pouvez pas jouer aussi longtemps, alors 2 ou 3 chansons seront suffisantes là.

PM : Quand vous achetez de la musique, que préférez-vous ? Vinyl, CD ou téléchargements légaux de mp3 ?

JT : Je préfère les téléchargements mp4 d’Itunes en ce moment. J’ai des tonnes de CDs à la maison, mais je télécharge ma musique ces temps-ci.

PM : Je suppose que comme vous voyagez beaucoup, les téléchargements sont plus pratiques ?

JT : Ouais nous nous sommes toujours en tournée, sur la route, et nous écoutons de la musique tout le temps, et si vous aimez quelque chose, vous l’avez immédiatement. Je préfère le son d’un CD parce qu’il est sensiblement meilleur, les mp3 sont un peu durs à écouter, mais les mp4 qu’Itunes utilise sont meilleurs car ils utilisent différents types de compression, mais pour écouter de nouveaux groupes rapidement, c’est plus pratique de télécharger.

PM : Quel est le dernier album que vous ayez acheté ?

JT : Probablement Rival Sons, oui, c’était Rival Sons.

PM : OK merci de nous avoir consacré du temps.

Europe sera en tournée en Angleterre au mois de Novembre. Ça vaut la peine d’aller les voir car ils sont excellents en live.
