Let to me to present to you a group of "legend": Europe! I could begin my history with "Once upon a time" so much the history is beautiful. It is like a fairy tale, there is action, adventure, bounces, there are the nice ones (us, the fans) and then there are the madmans (those which did not want the demo-tape of Europe at the beginning). There are also sorrows, but there are also joys. Moreover, Joey even found its "princess" (unfortunately it is not me, lol) then, who request people? But fortunately as very good fairy tale which is respected, all is well which finishes well!

Now listen to-well or rather read-well this...

1978/1979 : Joey Tempest and John Norum melt the Force group with Peter Olsson to the bass and Tony Reno with the drum.

1980 : a demo-tape of 6 titles is born, it obtains negative answers.

1981 : arrived of John Leven o the bass who replaces Peter Olsson.. A new demo-tape is born, but the houses of discs still do not want any.

1982: the girl friend of Joey sends a demo-tape to the greatest contest of Rock'n'roll: the Rock'n'roll SM. The 1st price is the recording of an album. Approximately 4000 demonstrations were sent to this contest only approximately 80 groups will have the advisability of occurring into live, the demo-tape of Force is chosen and they can take part in the contest. They decide to change name and take the name of Europe. Europe arrives finally and they win the contest, it was the 12/12/1982. More OF WIN this final, Joey is elected better singer and John is elected better guitarist.

They thus record their first album which leaves in February <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:metricconverter w:st="on" ProductID="1983. In">1983. In</st1:metricconverter> a few weeks the album is classified 8th better sale of album in Sweden and they will become gold disc. At the same time, they learn their success in Japan with "Seven doors hotel" thanks to a Japanese journalist.

In 1984, leaves the 2nd album "Wings of tomorrow", Mic Michaeli joined the band, it will replace Joey, which until now in more of the song ensured the keyboards. Tony Reno wearying and finding the group "less fun" decides to leave. He is replaced by Ian Haugland.

At the end of 1984, Europe takes down the top 12 Japanese of the foreign artists.

1985: Europe signs with CBS. Joey takes part and written "Give has helping hand" with the profit of the assistance to the Third World with Swedish Hard Rock' S Own Band Aid. Kee Marcello is the producer and Joey amongst other things shares the vocal parts with Robert Ernlund of the Treat group.

This same year Joey writes to the music of film "One the loose" which includes "Broken dreams" and the first versions of "Rock'n'roll the night" and "One the loose".

The remainder of the year occurs to the writing future album...

1986 : Joey, following a bad disease with problems of voice, but individual "The final countdown" produces by Kevin Elson leaves in February. In September, Europe makes a tour in Japan and benefits from it to take part in various emissions TV, interviews and promotions. Then return towards Sweden for concerts and emissions TV through all Europe. The choc occurs in October when John Norum announces his departure of the group. After several refusal Kee Marcello thus agrees to be its substitute. John continues all the same the tour to leave time with Kee to learn the songs. He will leave the scene with Europe at the time of his last concert in Amsterdam. As for Kee, it will make its 1st concert in Germany.

1987 : beginning of the world tour in March in Norway, the group is with its apogee, the album was sold to approximately 8 million, it is 1st in France, Sweden, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg... and even in the United Kingdom however famous difficult market "final The countdown" the individual one was n°1 in 26 countries, 8th in the USA. Europe will prove that they are not only the group of one hit: 4 titles of the album were classified with signal 20 and "Carrie" became n°1 in the USA. The album remained classified approximately 70 weeks: it is enormous!! The United States is "ripe" to receive the Europe beachcomber, follows a round of 22 cities lasting avril/mai 1987. The USA fell under the attacks from our Vikings!!

"final The countdown" is played on all the occasions: sporting competition with the political meeting (Jacques Chirac in made its music of countryside at the time of Presidential of 1988) with the meetings of motivations the commercial ones...

1988 : it is time to go back to work, after some concerns for compositions, Joey returns to work in his parents. It written there the 12 titles of "Out of this world". It is Ron Nevison the producer, the recording is done in London and leaves at the summer 1988.

Europe will in tour the USA with Def Leppard. At the end of the year in fact Asia accomodates Europe with a concert in Bombay in front of 60000 people.

1989 : European tour with more than 50 dates. 19/08/89 a concert with Milton Keynes with Skid Row, Bon Jovi and Vixen (happy birthday to you Joey, happy birthday to you!!) in front of 60000 people.

1990 : session writing, then turned to Southeast Asia and South America with a great concert in Chile: Vina Del Mar: 2 evenings in front of 30000 people and of the million televiewers.

1991 : left "Prisoners in paradise" produces by Beau Hill. Europe makes an appearance noticed with the Paris-Moscow concert in September in front of several thousands of people and several million televiewers. I remember that, at the time I believe that it was already Claire Chazal who had spoken about the "formidable message of the singer of Europe: Joey Tempest ".

They also turned the clip of "Prisoners in paradise" to Paris: at the Institute of the Arab World.

The 31/12/91, they play the dome of Tokio with Metallica and Thunder.

Then thank you... thank you Messrs for this formidable history for love, passion, friendship which I live with you. Without you, I would not be what I am now, I would not be this "adult" who I am now... I grow up with you, I knew all with you, the joys and the sorrows, are delirious them, the doubts and the insane-laughter, and I always left myself there because you were there with me (like my parents also nevertheless lol). I love you and I have an admiration without limits for you. Thank you still... thank you to have returned, I cried about it of joy when I learned your return! Thannnxxxxxx!!!

  • At the time of its passage to <?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = ST1 />the Fair to the Wines of Colmar in August 2004, the Swedish group Europe had not given any interview, certainly due to the stress generated by their reformation. Fortunately, meanwhile the group gave many concerts enabling him to find its insurance and to be again available for interviews. So when the proposal to meet one of the members of the group was made to me at the time of its arrival in Z7 on last 9 March, I immediately accepted. With final, it is in company of a stimulating colleague of radio on Basle that maintenance proceeded in the presence of Joey Tempest very slackened and very open to our questions. (Yves) <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Do you remember the show that Europe gave last August to the Fair with the Wines of Colmar ?

Oh yes, I remember it very well and when one found oneself after the concert with other members of the group have it is known as which one really had just carried out a show of hell and which it was in this manner there that it was necessary to continue to give concerts.

Precisely, that made a long time that you had not turned any more. How that does it occur ?

Well, we began last year with Sweden Rock Festival, then we made festivals last summer, to connect by rounds in Scandinavia, Europe and in Japan in January, then to start again a new European round. To the exit of this one, we will go to America, to return to Ireland and in Scotland then some festivals and after we let us compose our new album.

In the past, you had a phenomenal success and you played in great stages and large rooms whereas now you play in smaller places. Isn't that difficult ? :

Not, we like to play and we already knew that in the past, because we did not always play in great places and then currently that depends on the countries, bus according to places', the rooms are more or less large, but that does not obstruct us. It is with us all to give and work hard to find larger places.

You made a lot of things during the separation of Europe like albums solos or other projects. Is Europe your only project ?

Yes, absolutely, because I cannot concentrate at 100% out of two things at the same time. We worked very much on our future dvd which we recorded there is little in Hammersmith in London. It is super a dvd, because in more of the concert, there will be interviews and scenes backstage.

Your last album is entitled "Start From The Dark". When you started again to turn, this title applied in the direction or that was "a departure of the shade" ?

Not, not really because to go with the meeting of the fans and to play was really easy. That was a true pleasure and we did not think that the answer of the fans would be so enthusiastic. It is something of fabulous. In fact, we kept secret our return and very was done discreetly in Sweden during the winter. We also put in this album what we feel. Very was done naturally. We began in June last year with John and three titles "Start From The Dark", "Got To Have Faith" then "Settle For Love" and after very was connected : I wrote with Mick then then all alone. The only thing that we knew, it was that we had a more modern sound on the levels of the guitars.

Are you satisfied with the sales of the album ?

Yes, we have three various companies which are occupied of the album : there are Sanctuary in Europe, Sony in Scandinavia and JVC in Japan. Each one works in a different way but they do it very well. Sanctuary for example is really important in Europe and especially they have groups live. The sales are not comparable with the eighties, but it is ok.

Do you appreciate new groups ?

Yes, I appreciate Audioslave, Velvet Revolver, Lost Prophets, and what of other ?, perhaps certain tricks in Linkin Park.

Does the inspiration come you from everywhere, but this influence of old groups is always here ?

Yes, because the old tricks always remain. We have all grown together and when we left together to drink a beer, we were going to see Deep Purple, Rainbow, Whitesnake, UFO, MSG, Thin Lizzy and that remains our roots. We do not have to seek, these influences arise in a natural way.

Are you tried by new experiments, in acoustics for example ?

I do not know. Acoustics is resting, but for the moment we want especially to play extremely and all to explode.

Your set is composed of a mixture of old songs and the new ones. Does the public react well to the new pieces :

Yes, there is no problem, because it appreciates the new songs well, because we chose to play those which really like. We play certain old songs which the public knows, but I must say that the mixture of both functions very well.

Everyone knows "The Final Countdown" which was diffused an incalculable number of times. To play this song each evening can it be regarded as forming part of a job or always take pleasure to interpret it ?

Oh, we always appreciate to play it, because even if it is a song which was written it is a long time, it always gathers people and environment is always fantastic on this title.

You spoke to us before new album. Can you say some to us more ?

We started to think of it a few weeks ago and some ideas are already arisen but the writing really will begin after the summer.

Will this album follow the way of "Start From The Dark" where the guitars are more powerful and keyboards more in withdrawal :

I do not know yet, because it is too early to speak about it. In fact, we perhaps will test tricks, but what is certain it is that we will make the album which we will feel.

The musical market is very different since your beginnings :

Yes, it is hard especially if you do not form part of a group live. If you plays live, you can t'en leave, because when you plays and that you are in a super group, which is the case with Europe, it is super and that feels and people remember that and they speak about it between them afterwards. All changed nevertheless, since the large companies do not have to be able as much any more. You can now sell your album in various ways, such as for example in licence.

You spoke to us about new a dvd, but what happenhappen does of an album live since the group never recorded some and that moreover, the group sounds completely differently on scene that in studio, since the pieces are often played of more hard?

They is in hand, because we recorded several shows in particular in Japan, but for the moment no decision was made on the choice of recording which will be reproduced on the album. It is true that some our albums have a very clear production whereas in live it is different, it is true

Especially that you have an acute direction of the communication :

Yes, we realized there last summer with the shows and we really wanted to continue in this way, because people remember it after and then for some time, people want to re-examine truths groups on scene.

For some time the scene rock'n'roll developed in Scandinavia. What do you think about it ?

Yes, I know that there are not badly young groups which come from Finland, of Sweden, but I find that their music is different from ours which is centered on our roots and the seventies. Certain groups are more heavy. The Gothic rock'n'roll is also very popular that I like with his with dimensions dark.

With what do allot you this profusion of groups coming from north ? At the winter which is very long ?

Oh yes, that can be an explanation, because we have time to write during the winter.

Thank you Yves from the Web mag Rockzine Passion to have to authorize me to publish this interview!
